.About:
Cheryl Pope is a visual artist focused in sculpture, installation, and performance.
Her work questions and responds to issues of identity as it relates to the individual and the community, specifically in regards to race, gender, class, history of power and place. Her practice emerges from the act and politics of listening.
For the past three years, (2012) Pope has been developing JUST YELL. Focusing on the physicality and embodiment of language, the politics of listening, and connecting community, Just Yell explores the nuances present in poetry, performance, sculpture, and public experience. Strategies employed challenge and create conditions to be activated by the public emerging a dialogue through multiple points of attention and experience. Each situation offers the opportunity for the invisible to become visible in the way that it is experienceable.
Pope received her BFA and Masters in Design from the School of the Art Institute Chicago, where she is now a full time Professor in the Fashion Department. She is represented by Monique Meloche Gallery in Chicago, Galleria Bianconi in Milan, and Spinello Projects in Miami. Pope studied under the artist Nick Cave for 12 years, was a teaching artist at the Museum of Contemporary Art for 7 years, and worked in multiple community based organizations throughout Chicago since 2003. Her work has recently been exhibited at The Poetry Foundation, The White House, Chicago Cultural Center, Kunsthalle Osnabrueck., and in 2015 was a 3Arts recipient.
